ANC EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF A STRUGGLE STALWART

The African National Congress (ANC) mourns the passing of Comrade Elizabeth van der Heyden, a courageous revolutionary who dedicated her life to the fight for freedom and equality. Born in 1935 in Athlone, she was an early and active participant in the liberation struggle, joining movements like APDUSA and the Cape Peninsula Students Union. Her commitment to justice led to her arrest in 1964, where she served a decade-long sentence with dignity and resilience, continuing to inspire her fellow prisoners.

Comrade Betty’s life was marked by an unwavering dedication to the liberation of our people, and her contributions remain an enduring legacy. Her bravery and sacrifices during one of the most challenging periods in our country’s history serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the lengths to which our struggle heroes went for freedom.

The ANC extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, and comrades. May they find solace in the knowledge that her legacy will forever inspire future generations to continue the fight for a truly free and equal South Africa.
