ANC MOURNS THE PASSING OF A DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIC AND LEADER

The African National Congress (ANC) has learned with sadness of the passing of Professor Brian O’Connell, an academic, leader and former Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Professor O’Connell’s unwavering commitment to education and his transformative leadership at UWC played a critical role in shaping the institution into a beacon of hope and knowledge. His efforts not only strengthened UWC but also contributed significantly to the broader landscape of higher education in South Africa, particularly during challenging times of institutional transformation.

The ANC extends its heartfelt condolences to Professor O’Connell’s family, friends, and the academic community. His legacy of intellectual rigor, dedication to social justice, and passion for education will continue to inspire generations to come. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable contributions he made to our nation and the indelible impact he leaves behind.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
