THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS (ANC) COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The African National Congress (ANC) joins the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day, a day that reaffirms our collective commitment to the advancement of women’s rights and the eradication of all forms of discrimination and oppression. This year’s observance is a reminder of the resilience and courage of women who, throughout history, have been at the forefront of struggles for justice, equality, and freedom.

The ANC pays tribute to the many women, past and present, who have played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s democracy and continue to contribute to building a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and prosperous society.

The ANC has consistently advanced policies and programmes aimed at dismantling patriarchy and promoting gender equality. The ANC-led government has implemented legislative reforms to safeguard women’s rights, including the strengthening of laws on gender-based violence, equal pay for equal work, and economic inclusion.

Our commitment to gender parity is reflected in the increased representation of women in leadership roles across government, business, and civil society. Through initiatives such as the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, we continue to push for systemic change to end violence against women and children.

Despite these achievements, we acknowledge that much more still needs to be done to realise full gender equality. Women, particularly those in rural areas and the working class, continue to face economic exclusion, gender-based violence, and social inequalities. The ANC remains steadfast in its pursuit of policies that empower women, enhance their economic participation, and protect their rights. We reaffirm our commitment to strengthening the fight against gender-based violence, ensuring the full implementation of gender-responsive budgeting, and expanding opportunities for women in all sectors of the economy. On this International Women’s Day, we call upon all sectors of society to work together in building a truly inclusive and equal nation. The fight for women’s emancipation is not a battle for women alone—it requires the collective efforts of all South Africans.

The ANC remains resolute in its mission to build a South Africa where women are free, safe, and equal. We stand firm in our belief that empowering women is not just a moral imperative but a fundamental pillar of a just and prosperous society.
