THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS (ANC) MOURNS THE PASSING OF THE FIRST BLACK FEMALE NUCLEAR SCIENTIST SENAMILE MASANGO

The African National Congress (ANC) mourns the passing of Ms Senamile Masango, who was the first black female nuclear scientist in the country. Ms Masango was renowned for being the first African woman to participate in an African-led experiment at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).

Born into a Zulu royal lineage in KwaNongoma, in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) she demonstrated academic brilliance from an early age and her passion for science was ignited during her high school years. She enrolled in university at the age of 16 to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Electronics, followed by an Honours degree in Nuclear Physics. She holds a Master’s degree in Nuclear Physics (Cum Laude) from the University of the Western Cape, where she conducted research on the B(E2) value in Neon-20. Further strengthening her leadership credentials, she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Leadership from Wits Business School, equipping her with the expertise to navigate the complexities of the energy sector with confidence and vision.

Breaking barriers, she became the first African woman to be part of an African-led research team conducting experiments at CERN, the world-renowned European Organization for Nuclear Research, where groundbreaking discoveries like the Higgs-Boson were made. Her passion for scientific progress and innovation earned her the prestigious International Women in Science Award in 2022, a testament to her global impact.

Ms Masango was a pioneering nuclear scientist, world energy leader, and entrepreneur whose remarkable contributions have left an indelible mark on the global scientific and energy sectors. As the Executive Chairman and Founder of Mphathisithele Consulting PTY, an esteemed energy consulting firm, and the visionary behind the Senamile Masango Foundation, she dedicated her career to empowering African women in STEM and advancing sustainable development goals.

Her influence in global energy leadership was evident in her role as South Africa’s Research Leader at the BRICS Youth Energy Outlook, where her foundation led the winning team in 2020. Recognized among the 50 Global Inspirational Women of 2020 and a Women in Tech Global Awards finalist in 2021, Senamile Masango charted the path for future generations.

At the time of her death, she was a PhD candidate in Nuclear Physics, continuing pushing boundaries and inspiring young women across the continent. Her journey was one of resilience, excellence, and unwavering dedication to building an Africa where no one is left behind.The ANC salutes Ms Masango’s contributions and hopes that her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of scientists and innovators. Her dedication and pioneering spirit have left an indelible mark on South Africa’s scientific community.
