The African National Congress (ANC) dips its revolutionary banner in honour of Comrade Muntukayise Bhekuyise “Mphemba” Ntuli, a tried and tested freedom fighter who served our revolutionary movement with selfless dedication and utmost loyalty. Comrade Bhekuyise was mostly referred to in his clan name “Mphemba”. Death be not proud!
Mphemba cut his political teeth at a very young age. He worked for the ANC underground structures at a time when it was extremely dangerous to be associated with the ANC. He placed the goal of liberation above his own safety and comfort.
Mphemba belonged to a generation of fearless and trusted operatives of Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) and centrally involved in the establishment of ANC structures in Northern Natal following its unbanning. As a disciplined and seasoned activist, Mphemba was elected Chairperson of the ANC in Musa Dladla Region subsequently for over 15 years.
Even when his own family was harassed with his own mother and siblings killed by security agents, Mphemba remained in the trenches of struggle fighting for the freedom of his people.
Mphemba will be remembered for his unrelenting commitment towards peace in Nothern Natal at the height of political violence and instability. Even at the risk of loosing his own life, Mphemba courageously stood against the notorious apartheid regime for the sake of the masses of our people.
Mphemba served as Member of Parliament in the National Assembly from 1999-2003.
At the time of his passing, Mphemba was a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison.
The ANC sends its heartfelt condolences to his family, comrades, the government and people of Kwazulu-Natal as well as the entire mass democratic movement. We wish them strength and fortitude in their moment of grief.
Lala Ngoxolo, Mphemba, Godide, Ndlela kaSompisi.
