ANC CONDEMNS THE TRAGIC MURDER OF IMAM MUHSIN HENDRICKS
- 15 February 2025
The African National Congress (ANC) is deeply saddened, outraged and condemns the brutal murder of Imam Muhsin Hendricks, a respected religious leader and human rights advocate, who was tragically gunned down in Bethelsdorp, Gqeberha. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those who were touched by his work.
Imam Hendricks dedicated his life to fostering inclusivity and challenging discrimination within religious and social spaces. As South Africa’s first openly gay Imam, he fearlessly championed the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, often in the face of hostility and threats. His murder is not only an attack on an individual but on the values of equality, dignity, and justice that are enshrined in the constitution of the country and ANC policy.
The ANC condemns in the strongest possible terms this heinous act of violence and the hateful rhetoric that continues to fuel discrimination against members of the LGBTQIA+ community. No South African should live in fear because of their identity or beliefs. We urge law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice and to dismantle the networks of intolerance that continue to breed such violence.
As the ANC, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the struggle for equality, dignity, and the protection of the human rights of all South Africans. Imam Hendricks’ legacy must serve as a rallying call to strengthen the fight against all forms of discrimination, homophobia, and hate crimes. Our movement stands firm in advancing policies and programs that promote an inclusive society where all individuals are respected, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or religious beliefs.
We call upon all sectors of society—faith-based organizations, civil society, and government—to work together to ensure that South Africa remains a country that upholds and protects the rights of all its people. The ANC will continue to champion progressive policies and advocate for the full and equal participation of the LGBTQIA+ community in all spheres of life.Imam Muhsin Hendricks’ life was one of courage, advocacy, and deep compassion. Let us honour his memory by redoubling our efforts to build a South Africa that is truly free, equal, and just.
