ANC HONOURS THE REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS AND INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS OF WOMEN
- 9 August 2024
As we commemorate Women’s Day in this year of celebrating 30 years of democracy, the African National Congress (ANC) honours not only the remarkable achievements and invaluable contributions of women throughout South Africa’s history but also their ongoing efforts and struggles in shaping our society today.
While our democratic dispensation reflects our nation’s progress, it also serves as a testament to the pivotal role women have played—and continue to play—in advancing our democracy, human dignity, and the broader human condition. Women’s Day stands as a powerful reminder of the historical role women have held in the fight against colonialism and apartheid, where they courageously led the charge for freedom and equality.
Their bravery, resilience, and unwavering commitment laid the foundation for the democratic South Africa we celebrate today. Yet, as we reflect on these three decades of democracy, it is crucial to recognize that the progress we have made as a nation is intricately linked not only to the past achievements of women but also to their ongoing contributions to the social, economic, and political landscape of our country.
The ANC remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing women’s development and ensuring that gender equality is realized across all sectors of society. Our journey over the past 30 years has shown that the empowerment of women is not only a matter of justice but a critical driver of sustainable development, economic transformation, and the advancement of human rights. However, we acknowledge that much work remains to be done to address the persistent challenges faced by women, including poverty, inequality, and unemployment.
As we pursue a fully inclusive democracy, we reaffirm our dedication to addressing these systemic issues. This includes a renewed call for collective action to combat gender-based violence, which continues to afflict our communities. Women’s Day is not just a day of remembrance; it is a call to action, urging us to recognize and support the continuing contributions of women in every aspect of life.
We urge the government, civil society, businesses, traditional leaders, and all stakeholders to join forces in eradicating this scourge and building a safer, more just society for women and girls, and pursue economic empowerment for women so that our vision of a thriving, equitable South Africa is realised. But the empowerment of women is not only about economic progress—it is about recognizing their roles in every sphere of life, ensuring that women have the opportunities, resources, and support they need to continue driving the transformation of our society. As we celebrate 30 years of democracy, we must recommit to the development of women as both a cornerstone of our national progress and a fundamental aspect of our shared humanity.
Today, we pay tribute to the courageous women who have paved the way for our democracy and continue to inspire us with their legacy. Among these brave women are colossal figures like Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Mandela, Lilian Ngoyi, Fatima Meer, Ruth First, Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, Helen Joseph, Charlotte Maxeke, Amina Cachalia, Adelaide Tambo, and many others. Their contributions have not only shaped our past but also guide our future as we strive for a more inclusive, equal society.
We are equally inspired by the countless women of today who continue to lead and fight for justice, equality, and the betterment of humanity. We are particularly honoured by the ongoing presence of Isithwalande/Seaparankwe Mme Sophie Williams De Bruin, whose courage and inspiration continue to light the path forward in our struggle against patriarchy.
