ANC Mourns
Professor Vishnu Padayachee

The African National Congress (ANC) has learned with shock and sadness about the passing of Professor Vishnu Padayachee, an outstanding scholar, a progressive academic and a long-standing activist of the mass democratic movement.
Professor Padayachee dedicated most of his inttellectual life to the struggle for social justice and the reconstruction and development of South Africa.
Throughout his academic journey, Professor Padayachee distingushed himself as a world-class academic and researcher especially in the field of economics, economic history, economic transformation, and development.
In the 1980s, he worked closely with the progressive trade union movement. He also served as a member of the Economic Trends group, which supported the democratic trade union movement with research.
Professor Padayachee was a leading member of the Macroeconomic Research Group, which provided support to the mass democratic movement in the period towards the democratic transition. He was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to the board of the South African Research Bank.
He has written a number of books and academic articles. His views have contributed enormously in shaping the direction of post-apartheid economic policy and transformation.
The ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire mass democratic movement. We wish them strength and fortitude during this difficult time.
