ANC NOTES NEWS 24’s CLARIFICATION ON MISLEADING STORY

The African National Congress (ANC) has noted that News 24 corrected a distortion of our statement on the conflict in Israel and Palestine. The article as it now appears reflects to the ANC’S statement. We have filed a complaint with the Press ombudsman in which we indicate that a correction and an apology is the appropriate remedy for the distortion and we await the outcome of the press ombudsman’s findings in this regard.

We reiterate that the ANC is highly concerned about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine which has witnessed an alarming escalation in tensions, primarily due to concerns regarding Israel’s disproportional use of force in carrying out its operations. The ANC continues to condemn the killing of civilians in this conflict and calls for constraint and adherence to international law by both actors.

The ANC underscores the imperative need for de-escalation in this conflict. The recent development of a full blockade imposed by the Israeli government on the Gaza strip will exacerbate an already dire humanitarian and security crisis on civilians.

We call on Israel to remove the blockade and allow for humanitarian help to assist civilians. Both sides must place a strong emphasis on fostering peace, security, and stability for both nations.

We strongly urge the UN Security Council to support the call for Palestine’s freedom and self- determination. Recognizing the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people is pivotal in the pursuit of a peaceful and equitable solution to this long-standing conflict, one that fosters stability and justice in the region.

The ANC remains steadfast in its commitment to advocate for enduring peace between Israel and Palestine. We call for meaningful dialogue, negotiations, and a dedicated pursuit of a two-state solution. Emphasizing peaceful coexistence and respecting the rights, dignity, and security of both Israelis and Palestinians is the cornerstone of a brighter future.
