Media Statement

The African National Congress (ANC) wishes to extend its gratitude to each and every South African for coming out in their numbers to exercise their much fought for democratic right to vote.

The high turnout confirms the confidence of the South African people in democracy and determination to have a say in the country’s future. The ANC looks forward to a clear mandate from voters to continue the work of transforming South Africa and building a better life for all.

Despite the many challenges, we are encouraged by the patience and tolerance of South Africans, indicative of our resilience and tenacity.

As counting continues, the ANC thanks the Independent Electoral Commission, its staff and election workers for their contribution to successful election days. We also thank all party agents, observers, police and defence force personnel, and members of the media.

A special word of thanks must go to the ANC volunteers, who worked tirelessly to bring out the vote and to ensure a strong showing for the ANC in the election.

The ANC trusts that the counting process will proceed smoothly and that the results will reflect the will of the South African people.
