ANC WELCOMES SMOOTH START TO VOTING

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the smooth start to voting across the country.

Reports received from across the country indicate that the overwhelming majority of voting stations opened on time and that voting is proceeding.

Reports also indicate that in most instances, voters are able to vote quickly and queues are being managed efficiently.

Where voting stations experience challenges with the Voting Management Devices (VMDs) voting should proceed using the paper-based copies of the voters roll.

The ANC commends voters who turned out in record numbers to cast special votes and votes abroad. The ANC welcomes the record number of 900,000 special votes and looks forward to a high voter turnout.

Voters are encouraged to vote early to avoid last-minute rushes and long queues. Voting stations close at 9pm.

Voters are reminded to go to the voting station at which they are registered, unless they if they have already pre- notified the IEC that they will be voting elsewhere (Section 24A votes). All voters should present their valid South African identity document (ID) when voting: either a green barcoded ID book, smartcard ID, or valid temporary identity certificate.

Voters are urged to check their registration details and confirm the location of their correct voting stations by using the following IEC channels:

  1. Online at www.elections.org.za/pw/Voter/Voter-Information

  2. SMSing their ID number to 32810 (R1/SMS)

  3. Contact centre on 0800 11 8000.

  4. IEC App downloadable from AppStore or Google Play
