- 2 September 2024
The African National Congress (ANC) would like to express its deep appreciation and bid farewell to the former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo as he embarks on his well-deserved retirement after being on the bench for 27 years.
Throughout his distinguished career, Chief Justice Zondo has been an exemplary custodian of our nation’s Constitution, upholding the values of justice, equality, and democracy. His unwavering commitment to the rule of law has played a pivotal role in strengthening South Africa’s judiciary and ensuring the protection of the rights of all citizens.
The ANC extends its appreciation to the contribution and dedication the Chief Justice has made to our democracy. We wish Chief Justice Raymond Zondo a restful and fulfilling retirement, confident that his legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
We also take this opportunity to once again congratulate the incoming Chief Justice Mandisa Maya. As we said in our statement of 25 July 2024, “Justice Maya exemplifies the belief that access should hold both jurisprudential and practical significance, her principles are built on a dedication to serving the people. Justice Maya will be the first woman in South Africa to be appointed Chief Justice, affirming the ANC’s commitment to gender equality and advancing women’s leadership across all sectors and societal leadership structures. We wish Chief Justice Maya a great tenure and offer her our unyielding support and commitment.”
