STATEMENT ON THE VITAL ROLE OF SPORTS, ARTS, AND CULTURE IN SOUTH AFRICA
- 5 July 2024
The African National Congress (ANC) takes immense pride in the rich tapestry of sports, arts, and culture that forms the heart and soul of South Africa. As we reflect on our journey, we recognize the invaluable contributions these sectors have made to our nation’s democratic evolution and global presence.
South Africa’s sporting achievements are a testament to our collective spirit and resilience. From the rugby fields to the athletics tracks, our sportsmen and women have brought home numerous accolades, uplifting the nation’s spirit. The Protea Men’s first ever place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final , the Women’s Rugby SA Team’s African Championship, and the remarkable achievements of athletes like Akani Simbine and wheelchair tennis Grand Slam champions Donald Ramphadi and Kgothatso Montjane highlight the excellence in our sports community.
The arts and culture sector in South Africa is a vibrant and dynamic force that has played a crucial role in shaping our national identity. Our artists, musicians, writers, and performers have told the stories of our struggles and triumphs, preserving our heritage while pushing the boundaries of creativity. The global success of Amapiano, born in the townships and now a worldwide phenomenon, exemplifies the innovative spirit of South African culture.
Its distinctive beats and melodies have captured the hearts of music lovers around the world, influencing music trends in cities from “Jozi to Ibiza”. Amapiano artists have headlined international festivals, collaborated with global stars, and topped charts, bringing South African sounds to the forefront of the global music scene.
Thuso Mbedu’s rise in Hollywood, starring in acclaimed films like “The Woman King,” and Laduma Ngxokolo’s influence in fashion with a MaXhosa store in Manhattan, demonstrate the international impact of South African talent. Grammy Award-winning DJ Black Coffee has filled iconic venues like Madison Square Gardens, while ceramist Zizipho Poswa and visual artist Zanele Muholi continue to make significant contributions to the global art scene.
Makhadzi, a dynamic musician, has garnered international recognition, winning the BET Viewers’ Choice Award for Best New International Act. Tyla, an international rising star, has also made her mark globally, winning both Grammy and BET awards, further showcasing the depth of the diversity of talent in South Africa’s music scene.
Despite a myriad of challenges in South Africa, our sports, arts, and culture have soldiered on. These sectors have not only survived but thrived, continuing to inspire and unite the nation. They have shown remarkable resilience and adaptability, proving that the spirit of South African creativity and excellence remains indomitable even in the face of challenges.
Since the dawn of our democracy, arts and culture have been instrumental in promoting freedom of expression and fostering a sense of national identity and pride. Today, they continue to use their platforms to challenge social injustices, celebrate our diversity, and build bridges across cultural divides.
The ANC remains committed to supporting and nurturing the sports, arts, and culture sectors. South Africa’s vibrant arts and culture scene is a cornerstone of our evolving national identity. Furthermore, the arts and culture sector forms a vital part of our national cannon to build a non-racial, non-sexist, and prosperous nation; whose creative talent stakes a claim in the moral and cultural life of the world at large.
We are committed to supporting and nurturing the sports, arts, and culture sectors. We recognize their potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance social cohesion. Through continued

investment and strategic initiatives, we aim to provide platforms for emerging talents and ensure that South Africa’s rich cultural legacy continues to thrive and inspire future generations.
Let’s do more, together.
