THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WELCOMES SIGNING INTO LAW OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE BILL

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the signing into law of the Climate Change Bill, which marks an important step in our path to sustainable development and environmental guardianship.

The legislation represents a critical aspect in enabling the development of an effective climate change response strategy. It lays the foundation for a long-term, just transition towards a low-carbon economy and a climate-resilient society. Having taken into consideration the urgency of climate change and its far-reaching implications on our environment, we are unwavering in the implementation of policies which speaks to the promotion of clean and renewable energy sources.

The effects of climate change on our rural and urban communities have had major impacts that include drought, depletion of water resources and biodiversity, soil erosion, floods, and diminished subsistence economies.

The 7th administration has a constitutional responsibility to provide health, well-being, and quality of life, while safeguarding natural resources for present and future generations, this integrates the concept of pursuing economic and social development in harmony with environmental conservation. The bill undoubtedly positions South Africa as a proactive global leader in climate governance while factoring in our own interests.

The ANC is of a firm view that an effective climate change policy must be integrated within the framework of sustainable development objectives and aligned with national development goals.
