THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WISHES TEAM SOUTH AFRICA WELL IN THE OLYMPICS

Amidst the exhilarating spirit of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the African National Congress (ANC), extends unwavering support to Team South Africa. Our athletes, fuelled by dedication and resilience, carry the hopes of a nation. As they step onto the global stage, they embody the legacy forged by their predecessors in Tokyo 2020.

Yet, beyond the arena’s cheers, we confront a stark reality—the plight of the Palestinian people. The apartheid Israeli regime perpetuates genocide, occupation, and human rights violations. Here, sports and politics converge, demanding our attention and action. In the words of Nelson Mandela, ‘Sport has the power to change the world.’

It unites across borders, speaks to youth, and ignites hope where despair once reigned. As we rally behind our athletes, we recognize that this Olympic flame symbolizes more than medals—it embodies unity and resilience.

Therefore, the ANC resounds its call: Israel must be excluded from the 2024 Olympics. We join a global chorus demanding an end to sports-washing of crimes against humanity. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) must champion human rights, standing firm against aggression in Palestine and the crisis in Gaza.

Let the IOC deliberate, not merely on medals, but on dignity and justice. Until a resolution prevails, let Palestinian athletes find safety and solidarity within these hallowed Games. For sports, when wielded right, can be a beacon, a force that transcends boundaries, inspires change, and shapes a better world.

The ANC supports the international call of isolating Israel in all areas of global engagement. We call on the athletes, fans, and sponsors of the Olympics take a stand. No normal sport in an abnormal society.
