THE ROLE OF NATIONAL OFFICIALS, INCLUDING THE SECRETARY GENERAL IS MANDATED BY THE CONSTITUTION

In response to the Sunday Times article titled “Raging bulls: Mbalula, Ntuli clash over ANC ‘top 7’ running regional conferences”, the African National Congress (ANC) wishes to set the record straight regarding the role of the Secretary General and all national officials in provincial and regional organisational processes.

The participation of national officials, including the Secretary-General, in regional conferences is a constitutionally mandated responsibility aimed at strengthening organisational discipline, unity, and renewal. The ANC Constitution tasks the Secretary-General with coordinating organisational work and ensuring implementation of National Executive Committee (NEC) decisions.

This role is not only appropriate but essential for maintaining cohesion and integrity across all structures of the movement. Regional conferences are no different. Therefore; the speculation from unnamed sources suggesting overreach by the Secretary General is rejected.

As the ANC advances the mandate of the 55th National Conference, it remains focused on rebuilding structures, enhancing organisational processes, and ensuring the party is positioned as a trusted servant of the people. We call on all members to embrace principled leadership, constitutional discipline, and collective renewal. The time is now for unity, not fragmentation.
