ANC WELCOMES EQUALITY COURT JUDGMENT IN THE LGBTQIA+ MATTER ADVANCING HUMAN DIGNITY AND EQUALITY
- 21 June 2026
The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the recent Equality Court judgment affirming the rights, dignity and equality of LGBTQIA+ persons in South Africa.
This judgment is a victory for constitutional democracy and a reaffirmation of the values of equality, freedom and human dignity that underpin our democratic order. It strengthens South Africa’s commitment to ensuring that no person is discriminated against, excluded or denied their humanity because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
As we observe Pride Month, the ANC reiterates its unwavering commitment to building a non-racial, non-sexist and inclusive society in which all people are free to live openly, safely and with dignity. The struggle against discrimination in all its forms remains an integral part of the broader struggle for human rights and social justice.
This judgment reminds us that democracy is not only measured by the rights contained in our Constitution, but by our collective determination to ensure that those rights are realised in the daily lives of our people. We therefore call on all South Africans to reject prejudice, hate and discrimination, and to embrace the values of equality, tolerance and respect for human dignity.
The ANC further encourages LGBTQIA+ community, particularly young people, to register to vote during the voter registration weekend and to participate actively in shaping the future of our country. Democratic rights are secured through participation, organisation and vigilance. As we prepare for the 2026 Local Government Elections, every voice matters and every vote counts.
The ANC remains steadfast in its commitment to defending the constitutional rights of all South Africans and advancing a society founded on equality, justice and human dignity.
