ANC CONDEMNS THE BRUTAL KILLING OF WOMEN AND CALLS FOR SWIFT JUSTICE

The African National Congress (ANC) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the senseless and brutal killings of women in our communities. The recent deaths of women in and around Kempton Park and Ekurhuleni have once again brought into sharp focus the devastating reality of gender-based violence andfemicide in South Africa. Every woman who is murdered is a daughter, a mother, a sister, a partner, a friend and a valued member of a community. Behind every statistic is a human life, a family shattered and a community left grieving. We cannot and must not become numb to the loss of women to violence.

The ANC extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. We share in their grief and stand with them as they demand answers, justice and accountability. We call on the South African Police Service to act with the utmost urgency and determination in investigating these cases and apprehending those responsible. Where perpetrators are identified, they must face the full might of the law.

There can be no room for complacency, unnecessary delays or investigations that loose momentum. Justice delayed is justice denied to grieving families.

We further call on law-enforcement agencies and all relevant authorities to ensure that information is urgently shared, investigative resources are mobilised and every possible lead is pursued. Communities must also be encouraged to provide information that can assist investigators, while ensuring the safety and dignity of those who come forward.

As a nation, our response must go beyond condemnation after lives have been lost. Prevention, effective policing, survivor support, prosecution and accountability must form part of a sustained national effort to make South Africa safer for women and girls. A society cannot claim to be free while women live in fear for their lives. The lives of women matter. Their safety must matter. Their justice must matter. And their killers must be brought to justice.
