AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS (ANC) COMMEMORATES WORLD AIDS DAY

The African National Congress (ANC) commemorates World AIDS Day, observed annually on 01 December since 1988, and it serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS and the need for global solidarity.

As we reflect on the 30 Years of Democracy, the ANC commends the strides made by the government and other relevant structures in the health sector. This year’s commemoration is under the theme “Equal Rights, Equal Care” with the objectives of raising awareness on the importance of anti-retroviral therapy; mobilising communities through outreach programmes; enhancing accessibility to testing and treatment facilities across and strengthening follow-up systems to ensure that patients remain engaged in care and treatment.

The ANC joins the global community in raising awareness, honoring those we have lost to AIDS, and supporting individuals living with HIV. This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of equity and solidarity in ensuring no one is left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The effects of HIV/AIDS in South Africa still remain deeply felt and concerning. As one of the countries most affected by the epidemic, it continues to be a public health priority.

While the effects continue to have social impact, placing burden on the economy and a strain on the healthcare system, we applaud the achievements done by the ANC led government in the past 30 years in terms of significantly reducing mother to child transmission rates which are now below 2%; promoting awareness campaigns; progress in treatment by providing ARV’s, whereby over 5 million South Africans are on antiretroviral therapy, dramatically reducing AIDS-related deaths; reducing the stigmatization and efforts in reducing infections.

South Africa’s fight against HIV/AIDS exemplifies both progress and ongoing challenges. The ANC honors the resilience of those living with HIV and renews our commitment to an AIDS-free future. This includes supporting prevention strategies, expanding access to care, combating stigma, and addressing the structural inequalities that perpetuate the epidemic.

Let us unite to ensure equity and dignity for all.
