AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF MAM REGINA MPANZA

The African National Congress (ANC) conveys its heartfelt condolences on the passing of Mam Regina Mpanza, a steadfast supporter of the liberation struggle and the wife of General Justice Maqina “Gizenga” Mpanza of the

Luthuli Detachment. Mam Regina’s life was defined by quiet courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom at a time when families of political prisoners bore immense hardship and uncertainty.

The ANC recalls with deep respect her role during the years when General Gizenga Mpanza was imprisoned and later forced into exile. Despite intimidation, suspicion, and personal risk, Mam Regina opened her home and her heart to young comrades who sought to visit the General on Robben Island, following the necessary political consultations and approvals of the movement’s leadership. Her dignity, resilience, and sense of duty embodied the values of solidarity and discipline that sustained the struggle during its darkest moments.

The movement further notes that Mam Regina remained steadfast amid misinformation and repression, standing firm on principle and truth. After General Gizenga’s release, she returned to Groutville and continued to provide unwavering support to his work, while also extending care and welfare to fellow comrades of the underground, including those who had endured imprisonment, exile, and surveillance.

Her contribution, though largely behind the scenes, was indispensable to the morale and cohesion of the movement.

The ANC honours Mam Regina Mpanza as one of the many unsung heroines whose sacrifices made our freedom possible. Her name is etched in the collective memory of the liberation struggle and is recognised in historical accounts of the underground.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the Mpanza family, comrades, and all who were touched by her life of service. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
