AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS JOINS THE NATION IN MOURNING THE ROSE OF SOWETO

The African National Congress (ANC) is deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved boxing legend, Dingaan “The Rose of Soweto” Thobela, a true South African icon and boxing legend.

The Rose Of Soweto was a proud South African export who was world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBO lightweight title from 1990 to 1992, the WBA lightweight in 1993, and the WBC super-middleweight title in 2000.

During his college years, he engaged in several sporting codes, yet boxing emerged as his primary focus. As an amateur, he amassed an impressive record of 80 fights, suffering only three losses.

After his retirement from boxing, he continued to contribute to the sport by further laying a foundation for young and aspirant boxers.

We convey our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire boxing community. May his memory continue to inspire and his legacy live on.
