AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS STATEMENT ON THE ELECTION OF POPE LEO XIV
- 9 May 2025
The African National Congress (ANC) warmly welcomes the election of Pope Leo XIV as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. This moment of global spiritual significance comes at a time when the world is in desperate need of moral clarity, compassion, and unity.
We join billions across the world who followed the sacred traditions of the Papal Conclave with hopeful anticipation. The ceremonial white smoke that rose above the Sistine Chapel is not only a signal of consensus among the Cardinals but a symbol of peace and renewal. In these times, marked by conflict and uncertainty in many parts of the globe, we pray that this symbol of hope will prevail over the dark clouds of war and suffering.
Reflecting on the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the National Chaplain of the ANC, Rev. Dr. Molefe Tsele said “Pope Leo XIV, as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, was shaped and is a product of Latin American experience and is a product of the Peruvian Liberation Theologians, including Gustavo Gutierrez. This enduring influence, of working amongst the poor and marginalised of Peru, is clearly manifested in His Holiness clear commitment to continue the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, in championing global peace, dialogue and bridge building. His early pronouncements which place emphasis on sanctity of human life, resonates well.”
He concluded.
South Africa, home to a vibrant and diverse Catholic community, stands ready to work with the Church under Pope Leo XIV in advancing the global struggle for peace, equality, and solidarity. We are confident that his papacy will be one of transformation, reconciliation, and spiritual fortitude The ANC extends its heartfelt congratulations and prayers to Pope Leo XIV. May we embrace Pope’s theme that “We must be the Church that build bridges” and commitment to work for Peace and Climate Change and his leadership bring strength to the faithful and wisdom to a world in need of healing.
