AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WELCOMES THE DECLARATION OF STATE OF DISASTER IN THE EASTERN CAPE

The African National Congress expresses its heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with the people of the Eastern Cape, in particular the communities of Mthatha, following the devastating floods that have brought pain, loss, and destruction to many lives.

We welcome the declaration of a State of Disaster by government under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa. This decision enables a coordinated and comprehensive response to the crisis that has affected over two thousand six hundred people and tragically claimed the lives of ninety individuals, including thirty children. This is a moment that calls on all of us to unite behind those who are suffering and extend compassion and care to the bereaved and displaced.

The ANC welcomes the deployment of the South African National Defence Force to support flood relief efforts, including the ongoing search and rescue operations. This intervention reflects the seriousness with which government is treating the situation and the value placed on every South African life. The presence of our soldiers on the ground affirms the duty of the democratic state to protect its people in moments of disaster.

The ANC commends the swift and hands-on response of national and provincial government, including emergency personnel, police services, health professionals, and municipal officials. We are particularly appreciative of the leadership of the OR Tambo District Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Mesuli Ngqondwana, who along with traditional leaders, community organisations, and faith-based institutions have remained on the ground ensuring that no one is left behind.

We also acknowledge the efforts being made to restore water, electricity, and essential services to affected areas. While progress is already visible in parts of the district, we welcome the continued work by authorities to ensure full recovery across all communities.

The African National Congress conveys its deepest condolences to families that have lost their loved ones. We hold in our thoughts every child, parent, elder, and neighbour who has been affected or remains unaccounted for. This is a time for unity, compassion, and collective strength. Together we will rebuild and restore our affected communities.
