ANC NOTES POSTPONEMENT OF BUDGET PROPOSAL IN THE INTEREST OF NATIONAL STABILITY
- 19 February 2025
The African National Congress (ANC) notes the decision taken by Parliament to postpone its sitting, which was convened primarily to receive a budget presentation by the Minister of Finance. Parliament took this decision following a request from the Cabinet. This decision was supported by all political parties represented in the National Legislature, except two, demonstrating a shared commitment to ensuring that budgetary processes are handled responsibly in the best interest of the country.
While the economic climate remains constrained, there must be mechanisms undertaken to secure the long-term sustainability of public services and maintain essential government functions. These measures that will ensure public sector wage increases for civil servants are honoured, that early childhood development opportunities are expanded, and that teachers, doctors, and other frontline workers remain in service. Additionally, the revitalisation of the commuter rail system will provide much-needed relief for working-class families, while above-inflation increases in social grants will protect the most vulnerable from the rising cost of living.
This process aligns with the priorities outlined in the ANC’s 2024 Election Manifesto, which is centred on economic recovery, social investment, and sustainable development. The ANC remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring that fiscal policy supports economic transformation and protects the poor, while fostering inclusive growth that benefits all South Africans.
As this matter continues to be deliberated, the ANC reaffirms its position that budgetary decisions must be taken responsibly, balancing the need for economic stability with the urgent demands of service delivery and social justice. The ANC will continue to engage with all stakeholders to ensure that the final budget reflects the aspirations of the people and advances the vision of a more equal and prosperous society.
