ANC STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE 61ST INDEPENDENCE DAY ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA

The African National Congress (ANC) extends its warmest congratulatios and best wishes to the people and government of the Republic of Zambia on the occasion of their 61st Independence Day.

On this historic day, we celebrate a nation whose freedom was won through courage, unity, and the indomitable will of it’s people. Under the leadership of it’s founding father, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, who walked along side President Oliver Reginal Tambo, Zambia emerged as a beacon of African liberation and solidarity. It was a steadfast ally in the collective struggle against colonialism and apartheid in South Africa.

Zambia’s journey from the dark days of oppression to the dawn of independence on 24 October 1964 remains an enduring inspiration across our continent. It is a story of a people who, through sacrifice and resilience, built a sovereign state grounded in peace, humanism, and dignity for all.

The African National Congress pays tribute to Zambia’s historic role as a frontline state, a home to exiled South African revolutionaries, and a base for liberation movements throughout the region. The bonds between our two nations were forged in the heat of struggle and strengthened by a shared vision of African unity, democracy, and social justice.

As Zambia continues to advance its democratic institutions, pursue inclusive development, and strive for economic self-determination, the ANC reaffirms its solidarity with the Zambian people. Together, we share the belief that Africa’s future lies in cooperation, peace, and the full realisation of the aspirations of our founding generations.

Long live the Republic of Zambia!

END//

ISSUED BY THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS.
