ANC WELCOMES DECLINE IN UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AS EVIDENCE OF SUSTAINED ECONOMIC INTERVENTION

The African National Congress welcomes the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey released by Statistics South Africa, confirming a 0.5 percentage point decrease in the official unemployment rate. This measurable improvement reflects movement in the right direction and signals that sustained policy interventions are beginning to yield tangible results in the labour market.

The decline in unemployment is not accidental. It follows deliberate economic stabilisation measures, expanded infrastructure investment, and focused employment programmes aimed at stimulating inclusive growth. Government-led initiatives to restore energy reliability, unlock investment commitments, and accelerate public infrastructure spending have created a more enabling environment for job creation. At the same time, targeted employment support programmes have provided work opportunities, particularly for young people and women, while supporting small enterprises and local economic activity.

While the overall unemployment rate remains unacceptably high and youth unemployment continues to demand urgent attention, this development demonstrates that coordinated economic reform, fiscal discipline, and growth-focused industrial policy can reverse negative trends. The stabilisation of inflation, improved investor confidence, and renewed momentum in key sectors of the economy have contributed to a climate where employment growth becomes possible.

The ANC remains clear that reducing unemployment is not a short-term task but a structural national priority.

This progress strengthens our resolve to deepen industrialisation, expand skills development, promote localisation, and intensify support for labour-absorbing sectors of the economy. South Africa’s recovery is underway, and through sustained intervention and partnership with business, labour, and communities, we will continue to work toward a more inclusive economy that delivers dignity, opportunity, and work for all.
