ANC WELCOMES ESKOM DECISIVE ACTION ON TARIFF INTERVENTION TO PROTECT INDUSTRY AND JOBS

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the conclusion of a 62c/kWh electricity tariff agreement by Eskom for Samancor Chrome and Glencore – Merafe Ferrochrome Smelters. This direct intervention marks a significant and concrete step in implementing the ANC 10 – Point Economic Action Plan, particularly Pillar 1 which focuses on energy and industrial policy by implementing preferential tariffs to drive economic activity.

This development reflects a capable and responsive state that intervenes to sustain industrial capacity, protect jobs and support economic growth. It demonstrates that the year of decisive action to transform the economy is being translated into measurable outcomes, where the state actively works to resolve constraints that undermine industrial production, investment and job creation

The targeted and differentiated tariff approach affirms a disciplined balance between ensuring Eskom’s financial sustainability and safeguarding strategic industries under pressure from hostile global market conditions. It is a clear expression of coordinated action between government, industry and labour to prevent deindustrialisation and sustain the productive sectors of the economy.

The ANC reaffirms that economic transformation requires practical interventions to implement commitments.

This agreement signals progress in fixing the grid, restoring confidence in the energy sector and advancing reindustrialisation. The movement remains resolute in driving implementation that grows the economy, creates jobs and strengthens South Africa’s position as a leading industrial economy on the African continent.
