ANC WELCOMES THE CONSISTENT FIGHT AGAINST CRIME AND CORRUPTION
- 21 November 2024
The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the latest updates from the Presidency and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), which reflect our unwavering commitment to fighting corruption and restoring accountability in state institutions. These developments reaffirm the ANC-led government’s dedication to ethical governance, decisive action against wrongdoing, and the safeguarding of public resources. The issuance of 166 investigation reports to various organs of state since 2018 underscores the determination to address corruption comprehensively and transparently, in line with the resolutions of our Conferences and the ANC Manifesto.
The recovery of R5 billion in misappropriated funds over the past 23 years, including R1.5 billion since March 2024, demonstrates the effectiveness of measures such as the establishment of the Special Tribunal by President Cyril Ramaphosa. These efforts ensure that public funds stolen from the people are returned to their rightful purpose. Equally significant is the progress made in holding individuals accountable for corruption related to Covid-19 procurement. Disciplinary actions and criminal convictions send a clear message that no one is above the law, irrespective of political party political affiliation or position in society. Those who betray public trust must face the consequences, as equality before the law is fundamental to justice and good governance.
While progress has been made, the ANC acknowledges that challenges persist. The fact that none of the companies implicated in Covid-19-related corruption have been restricted from doing business with the state reveals a need for further action. Nevertheless, the dismissal of senior officials and the 70 criminal convictions achieved through the Fusion Centre demonstrate the resolve to ensure accountability at every level. These outcomes strengthen public trust and highlight the ANC’s commitment to rebuilding state institutions and delivering a capable, developmental state.
As the ANC, we remain firm in our resolve to defend the gains of our democracy and deliver on the mandate of serving the people of South Africa. Guided by the principles of accountability and transparency, we will continue to strengthen institutional integrity and ensure that public resources are used for the benefit of all. Our efforts to root out corruption reflect the ANC’s enduring commitment to the values of equality, justice, and ethical leadership.
