CELEBRATING WORLD RADIO DAY

The African National Congress (ANC) joins hands with the global community in celebrating World Radio Day, a day that holds paramount significance in fostering accessible communication across the globe. World Radio Day, stemming from a proclamation by UNESCO member states in 2011 and subsequently endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2013, serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role radio plays in connecting communities, disseminating information, and amplifying voices that often go unheard.

During the darkest days of the liberation struggle, radio emerged as a beacon of hope and resistance. The ANC harnessed the power of radio through Radio Freedom, broadcasting messages of liberation and unity to our people, rallying them in the pursuit of freedom and justice.

In the journey towards democracy, the ANC remained steadfast in its commitment to media freedom and diversity. As a result, an enabling environment was created for community radio to flourish, ensuring that the voices of all South Africans could be heard. Today, South Africa boasts a vibrant radio community, with over 200 community radio stations broadcasting in all languages, alongside public and commercial radio.

As we celebrate World Radio Day, let us reflect on the profound impact radio has had in shaping our nation’s history and identity. Let us pay tribute to the broadcasters, technicians, and producers who have dedicated their lives to the noble cause of informing, educating, and entertaining our people. In the spirit of celebration, let us reaffirm

our commitment to upholding media freedom, promoting diversity, and nurturing the continued growth of radio as a powerful tool for social cohesion and development.
