THE ANC STATEMENT ON THE GUINEA BISSAU MILITARY COUP

The African National Congress is deeply concerned and firmly condemns the military coup and the suspension of electoral processes following the Presidential election in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. This unconstitutional action undermines the democratic will of the Bissau-Guinean people and threatens the stability of the region.

The ANC joins the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and the broader progressive international community in rejecting any attempt to subvert democratic governance on our continent. The resurgence of coups in parts of West Africa and the Sahel region poses a direct threat to the realisation of the African Union Agenda 2063 and erodes the foundational principles of peace, development and shared prosperity upon which the AU was built.

This destabilisation not only weakens state institutions but also reverses the hard-won gains made through decades of continental solidarity, integration and collective security efforts.

The ANC remains guided by the leadership of ECOWAS and the African Union in their efforts to restore constitutional order, protect the integrity of democratic processes and ensure the swift return to civilian rule in Guinea-Bissau. We call upon all parties to respect regional mechanisms, commit to dialogue and uphold the principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

The ANC stands in solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and reaffirms its commitment to defending democratic governance across the African continent.
