THE ANC STATEMENT ON THE MAIZE HARVEST FOR THE PERIOD 2025/26
- 14 May 2026
The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes and notes with the high sense of pride and appreciation a record- setting maize harvest for the 2025/26 season, with projections indicating a total of 16.8 million tonnes. This massive yield is driven by favourable rains and strong, sustained production conditions and the leadership of the agricultural sector.
This 16.8 million metric tons is higher than the previous 2024/25 season of 16.4 million tons, representing a well above the annual national consumption of approximately 12 million tons, leaving a substantial surplus for exports.
The growth in maize production is significant for the export markets, making South Africa a net exporter of maize.
The anticipated 16.8-million-tonne harvest will be one of the largest in the country’s history, strengthening food security in the region. This milestone is well above annual consumption. It is a major boost for the economy, and represents a positive growth path.
Our macroeconomic policies are bearing results, ensuring food security, self-sufficiency and cushion the country from hunger whilst contributing to the global maize supply.
The ANC will continue to work with all the stakeholders in the agricultural sector to ensure sustainability and growth. We congratulate the agricultural community on this massive achievement. Working together we can do more.
