ANC MOURNS THE PASSING OF PROFESSOR SIBUSISO BENGU

The African National Congress (ANC) mourns the passing of Professor Sibusiso Mandlenkosi Emmanuel Bengu, a distinguished educator, diplomat, and servant of the people. Born in Kranskop, Natal, Prof Bengu began his teaching career in 1952 and went on to found Dlangezwa High School in 1969, serving as principal until 1976. He also held the position of Dean of Students at the University of Zululand before leaving South Africa in 1978. His academic achievements included earning a PhD in Political Sciences from the University of Geneva and becoming the first black Vice-Chancellor of Fort Hare University in 1991, a transformative milestone in higher education.

In 1994, President Nelson Mandela appointed Prof Bengu as South Africa’s first Minister of Education in the democratic era. He oversaw the amalgamation of 17 fragmented education departments into a unified system, introduced Curriculum 2005 to reform the school curriculum, and worked tirelessly to dismantle apartheid’s legacy in education. After serving in this pivotal role, he represented South Africa as ambassador to Germany, upholding the nation’s dignity and interests abroad.

Prof Bengu’s political journey included his role as Secretary-General of Inkatha ye Nkuleleko ye Sizwe in 1974. In 1978, he left South Africa and developed a working relationship with the late ANC President Oliver Tambo. During his years in exile, he worked with the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva before returning to South Africa in 1991. His unwavering commitment to justice and equality and his contributions to the liberation struggle remain an inspiration.

The ANC extends its deepest condolences to his wife, Funeka, his children, grandchildren, and the entire Bengu family. South Africa has lost a towering figure whose legacy in education, diplomacy, and the liberation movement will endure for generations. Hamba kahle, Ngcolosi, Dlabazane, Shongololo.
