ANC STATEMENT ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Today, Wednesday, the 25th of May 2022, the African National Congress will participate in a public march in Mthatha calling for justice for Namhla Mtwa who was brutally murdered and was found lying cold and dead in her car.

This callous act of brutality against Namhla accounts for many others being meted against women and children in our country. Most recently we learned of the gruesome discovery of 6 year old Bontle Mthiyane’s body who was allegedly killed by her neighbours for muti purposes. Police recently arrested three men and are said to be making further arrests of those suspected of murdering Hilary Gardee.

These gruesome killings are nothing short of Human Cannibalism, which must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

The ANC has resolved to intensify its campaign against gender based violence and to act together with our government and all social partners to expose and isolate those involved in such heinous acts.

We call on our communities to take the lead in protecting women and children by reclaiming their streets and enforcing neighbourhood watch to expose suspicious elements without haste.
