ANC WELCOMES BY-ELECTION RESULTS

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the outcome of the municipal by-elections held on Wednesday, 23 August 2023 in which the ANC scored an overwhelming victory in four of the five wards contested. The ANC retained all its four wards, three in the Chris Hani District Municipality in the Eastern Cape and one in the Madibeng Local Municipality in the North West.

The ANC won 66% of the vote in Ward 25 in Nomonde Molteno, Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, and Chris Hani District Municipality. This represents a 14% increase from the 2021 local government elections where the ANC won by 52%. The ANC is particularly encouraged by its performance in two key voting districts. In the Dennekruin voting district, the ANC saw its support rise dramatically from 18% to 74%. In the African Episcopal Church voting district in Nomonde, the ANC surged from 53% to 74%.

In Ward 8 (Lucwecwe Mazangweni) in the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality, the ANC won 89% of the vote, almost equalling its 2021 local government elections performance. The ANC also won Ward 12 (Gqutyini Mkanzi) in Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality by 89%. Most encouraging for the ANC is that we won 98% of the vote in three out of seven voting districts and 97% in another district.

The impressive electoral performance of the ANC continued in the North West. In ward 25 (Bapong Bokfontein), Madibeng Local Municipality, ANC obtained over two-thirds of the vote (67%). We also note with satisfaction that most of the electoral growth in this ward went to the ANC. In the Bokfontein voting district, the ANC went from 52% to 70%. At Tlhogokgolo Primary

School in Bapong, the ANC’s share of the vote increased from 66% to 84%. At Primindia Hall, the ANC won this voting district with 78% of the vote. This district was won by the DA in 2021.

The ANC believes that these victories are a solid foundation for a decisive victory in next year’s national and provincial elections.

We are humbled and encouraged by this overwhelming show of confidence by voters which confirms that our messages of renewal and commitment to accelerate service delivery continue to resonate with the electorate. The ANC does not take the electorate’s support and confidence for granted. We urge all our newly-elected councillors to hit the ground running and to remain accessible and humble at all times. We further call on all our councillors to always place the interests of communities above their own.

We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our volunteers, supporters and structures for ensuring that the ANC remains the people’s choice.
